Why double the power does not double the speed
On thin sheet, the machine spends most of its time accelerating, decelerating and changing direction, not running straight at maximum speed. The limit is mechanical — gantry mass, servos, drive system — not the laser source.
Cutting a 2 mm part with many small holes: the head is stopping and turning almost constantly. More power removes none of that time.
Thick steel is the opposite. Cutting paths are long, the head runs steadily, and here power decides speed directly. This is where 6000W earns its money.
Choose by the work, not by the number
| Main work | Look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 mm sheet, many holes, small parts | 3000W | The bottleneck is mechanical, not power |
| 4–8 mm, moderate output | 3000W – 6000W | Depends on output and edge requirements |
| 10 mm and above, long cutting paths | 6000W and above | Power decides speed directly |
| Two to three shifts continuously | Higher power | Saved cutting time accumulates per shift |
| Thin stainless, clean edge required | Look at gas before power | Nitrogen versus air matters more |
Where the price difference is better spent
If your work sits in the thin-sheet group, the gap between 3000W and 6000W usually returns more when invested in:
- A pallet changer — load while the machine cuts, saving real time on every sheet
- A compressor and dryer that meet specification — this opens up air cutting and lowers monthly gas cost
- Good extraction and fume filtration — this affects lens life and working conditions
These three shorten cycle time and reduce monthly running cost. Surplus power sits idle if you do not cut thick.
The point most often missed
The maximum thickness on a brochure is the cut-through figure, not the figure for stable production. A machine listed at "cuts 20 mm" usually means it cuts through at a very slow speed with a poor edge. If you need to cut 20 mm daily for customers, ask about speed and edge photographs, not maximum thickness.
The most reliable check: send us your actual part. We will cut it on a 3000W machine and on a higher-power machine and send both samples back, so you can compare the edges and time it yourself.
